4th SAARCFOODS Regional Center workshop

20-24 March 2023 @ Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo

As the first event of the association, we have conducted the regional SAARCFOODS Association’s Academic sessions in Sri Lanka in collaboration with the world food program. Countries such as India, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Pakistan were participated in this event. INFOODS Global coordinator, INFOODS vice Global coordinator, SAARCFOODS regional Coordinator, WFP and FAO country representatives and Sri Lankan Government top ranking officials took part and shared their views.

Objectives:

  • To discuss important topics on the generation, management and use of food composition data in nutrition
  • To review ongoing country activities on food composition and nutrition
  • To share the experience of countries in the region on food composition activities and to explore existing capacities and capabilities
  • To discuss initiating a network to harmonize and promote food composition tables in SAARC countries

PARTICIPANTS: INFOODS global coordinators, SAARCFOODS regional coordinator, country focal points from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The participants included nutritionists, policymakers, relevant researchers from research institutes and universities who are working on food composition and nutrition in the SAARC region besides international UN bodies and Sri Lankan Ministry representatives.

The Focal point representatives and scientific teams from each SAARC country, Sri Lanka representative of FAO, Medical and scientific teams from Sri Lanka, Secretaries of Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Director General of Health services – Sri Lanka and 50 more professionals in data base analysis and implementation programs were participated. During this 4 day training course, following content were discussed: Application of Food composition data in dietary intake and nutrient adequacy calculation, Selection of food items for food composition tables, Application of food composition data base for intervention to improve nutrient intake, FAO/INFOODS guidelines for converting units, Denominators and expressions. Influence of Sampling on Food composition data, Laboratory Quality control for Nutrient analysis, utilization of Food composition data base in the Region. And several discussions were conducted on food composition activities and exploring the capacities and capabilities of each country.

Protein For a Healthy Nation

13th October 2023 at Blue waters hotel – Wadduwa

The world egg day was celebrated on 13th of October 2023 at Blue waters hotel Wadduwa. Sri Lanka, with the theme of “ Protein for Healthy Nation” it was to emphasis the importance of consuming eggs, preparation methods to preserve more nutrients, protein rich affordable replacements, and Micro nutrient value of protein rich food items were discussed. The program was sponsored by World Poultry Science Association in collaboration with United states Soybean export council And SAARCFOODS association in Sri Lanka. 100 medical and nutrition professionals participated to this event.

Annual Scientific Session 2023

13th of December 2023 in Colombo

The program was conducted based on how to utilize Food Composition Data base on food security in economic crisis and impacts of climate change. The Country Representatives of FAO, WFO, UNICEF The secretary of the president secretariat of Sri Lanka, the Secretaries of Ministry of Health and Ministry of Agriculture addressed the event. During this one-day program, Large scale food fortification in Asia and Pacific regions, opportunities, challenges and way forward were discussed, also several discussions were conducted on food waste management, climate change impact, aflatoxin management and food security. The program was sponsored by American Soybean Association and Fonterra group of Companies.

During this event following topics were discussed.

Challenges in Protein Food Supply Amid Climate Change” Dr. Michelle Braun, PhD, Need assessment for fortification programmes in Sri Lanka, Large Scale Food Fortification in Asia and the Pacific: Opportunities, Challenges, and Way Forward, Innovation through fortified parboiled unpolished rice, Fortifying food: Lessons learned, Climate change on Food production and Food safety –Dr Amal Harsha De Silva, Pro Vice Chancellor, IIHS & Dr Ananda Jayalal, Climate changes impact on food security, Climate change impact on aflatoxins management in the animal originated products in food chain, Climate change impact on food production and food safety, Food wastage prevention and Aflatoxin and food safety.

2024 AFACI project evaluation workshop

Thailand from 27th May – 31st May 2024 at Makkasan Hotel- Bangkok

The program contented with data compilation demonstrations, dietary guidelines of FAO/INFOODS, A field visit to Mahidol university – Institute of Nutrition and presentations of the reports from each country. This workshop provided a uniform platform for all the countries to share the challenges that they have overcame during the project, to share the proficiency on FCDB and data analysis and to make fruitful discussions on future plan of actions and goals.

26th of October 2024 at IIHS multiversity – Colombo Sri Lanka

The program was sponsored by American Soybean Association and Fonterra group of Companies. The participants included nutritionists, policymakers, relevant researchers from research institutes and universities who are working on food composition and nutrition in the SAARC region besides international UN bodies and Sri Lankan Ministry representatives.

Workshop with private and government salt producers of Sri Lanka

We have discovered that people were not consuming enough iodine which is lead to hypothyrodism and goitre and several complications such as heart diseases. To address the issue, the Association of SAARCFOODS in Sri Lanka collaborated with the Global Iodine Network and conducted a workshop for all the private and government salt producers of Sri Lanka. This program was conducted for 3 days and during that, the stakeholders of the project , ministry of health – food safety administration unit, the PI and the team of AFCD project, the CEOs of Salt industry and representatives of Global Iodine Network discussed on policy development, challenges of the industry, challenges of supply of iodine and introducing more effective technology to improve the iodine fortification of salt. The main objective of the program was to strenghthen the government on going salt iodification process. As an out come of the program the intrusty has received permission to fortify salt in larger range of iodine.
